In this capacity, the council is ultimately responsible for all rural fires that occur outside the NZ Fire Service urban fire districts, but is primarily concerned with controlling vegetation fires. The council also monitors daily fire danger levels, declares fire seasons (open, restricted or prohibited) and issues fire permits. The first hour of service for callouts to rural fires by the NZ Fire Service is free. After that, a charge is incurred. For information regarding fire restrictions or bans or getting your fire permit, please contact the Hawera Administration Centre.
