Pensioner Housing
For more than 30 years, the Council has offered a range of pensioner housing that provides a low-cost housing option for older people in the district. Bedsits, flats and tenant-contribution that accommodate both single people and couples are available.

In January 2006 the Council entered into a partnership with Presbyterian Support Central (PSC) to provide better services to pensioner housing residents.

PSC manages the tenancy arrangements and takes care of minor maintenance. The not-for-profit organisation also provides social services for residents, which are designed to enable older people to live independently in their own home as long as possible.

Supported independent living co-ordinators act as a central contact point for tenants, making sure day-to-day maintenance is taken care of and providing advocacy, information and social support for residents.

The Council continues to be responsible for major maintenance work, such as repainting and roof replacement.

ELGIBILITY
The low-cost housing is available to people who meet the Council's specified criteria. To be eligible for a unit, applicants must:

  • be aged 65 years or more
  • have retired from full-time or permanent employment
  • have assets not exceeding $20,000 for a single person, or $25,000 for a couple

OR
  • be receiving assistance from Work and Income as an invalid
  • have assets not exceeding $20,000 for a single person, or $25,000 for a couple.

OUR TENANT CONTRIBUTION OPTION
Under our tenant contribution option, a flat or unit leasee can purchase the right to occupy a flat from the council. The leasee pays an amount agreed to by the Council and from then on, a small rental that covers rates, insurance and maintenance costs. When the leasee decides to leave the property, the Council buys back the property - in other words, the leasee has a guaranteed buyer. To find out more about this option, please contact our property and legal executive Yvonne Corrigan on:
